After my discovery that I had been making many mistakes in creating welcoming habitats for wildlife in my garden as well as my client’s gardens, I went on a mission to find out everything that I could about how to best share our spaces with the critters around us.
At this time, there was very little information, and I soon discovered that the information that did exist recommended the very same invasive plants that I was now working so hard to remove from people’s landscapes. These were books by well-respected sources, too. Rodale had produced several books on the subject of wildlife gardening or butterfly gardening, and so had the National Audubon Society.
It was 1993 when Noah’s Garden: Restoring the Ecology of Our Own Back Yards by Sara Stein, arrived on the shelves of my local bookstore (I spent as much time searching for information as I did searching for plants). I felt like I had found my soul sister. Finally, someone was putting into words all of the things I had been trying to find a way to teach my clients!
Noah’s Garden: Restoring the Ecology of Our Own Backyards is a book by Sara Stein that explores the idea of creating small wildlife habitats in our own backyards. The author argues that creating these habitats is not only important for wildlife, but it also has many benefits for us as well, including increased enjoyment of our own yards, better air and water quality, and a sense of connection with nature.
In the book, Stein takes the reader on a journey through her own backyard, showing how she transformed it from a traditional lawn into a thriving wildlife habitat. She shares the challenges she faced, the lessons she learned, and the joy she experienced along the way. The author also provides practical advice and tips for creating a wildlife garden, such as choosing the right plants, designing habitats, and attracting and maintaining wildlife.
One of the key themes in the book is the idea that we can all make a difference in our own yards, even if we don’t have a lot of space. Stein shows that even a small patch of land can be transformed into a thriving wildlife habitat with a little bit of effort and creativity. She also emphasizes the importance of using native plants and working with, rather than against, the natural environment.
Overall, Noah’s Garden is a fascinating and inspiring book that encourages readers to think about their own backyards in a new way. The author’s passion for wildlife and the environment shines through on every page, and the practical advice she provides is both helpful and easy to follow. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to bring a little bit of nature into their own backyard.
