Celebrate National Wildflower Week: Get Out and Enjoy the Beauty of Nature!
Every year, the third week of May is designated as National Wildflower Week, a time to celebrate the beauty and diversity of wildflowers across the United States. If you’re a nature lover or just looking for an excuse to get outside and enjoy the beauty of spring, National Wildflower Week is the perfect opportunity.
National Wildflower Week was established to raise awareness about the importance of wildflowers and their habitats. Wildflowers play a critical role in the ecosystem, providing food and habitat for pollinators and other wildlife. They also add color and beauty to our landscapes and help to protect the soil from erosion.
There are many ways to get involved in National Wildflower Week. You can visit a local park or nature preserve to see the wildflowers in bloom, or you can participate in a guided hike or wildflower walk. If you’re feeling creative, you can even create your own wildflower garden or meadow at home.
One of the best ways to celebrate National Wildflower Week is by learning about the different species of wildflowers in your area. Each species has its own unique beauty and story, and by getting to know them, you can gain a deeper appreciation for the wonders of nature. You can also help to protect these beautiful flowers by supporting conservation efforts and avoiding the use of harmful pesticides in your own garden.
This week is National Wildflower Week, and this is a great opportunity to learn about our native wildflowers, add some to your wildlife garden, as well as help to protect them because many of them are endangered due to our relentless need for more development (Do we REALLY need yet another Walmart?)
Here’s some ideas for how to honor our native wildflowers:
- Visit a local wildflower preserve. These preserves are excellent places to observe these plants in their natural communities of other plants. You will get to see which plants work well together, and get lots of ideas for your own wildlife garden.
- Join Your Local Native Plant Society. Every state has a native plant society, and many have several chapters around the state. Most of these have wonderful educational events where you can learn more about what plants will work best in your garden.
- Add more Native Plants to your wildlife garden. If you want wildlife in your garden, the best thing that you can do is add more native plants to your landscape because native plants support local food webs.
- Remove invasive plants. Invasive plants have no local predators. No insects or other wildlife feed on these plants, so there is nothing to keep these plants in control. Therefore, they’re running amok in our natural areas and wiping out the native plants that our wildlife DOES feed on. Plus these plants are causing many problems to our environment and ecosystem services.
- Start practicing the Five Pillars of Ecosystem Gardening. By gardening sustainably, conserving water, creating healthy soil, removing invasives, and adding more native plants, you’ll be creating welcoming habitat for wildlife in your garden so that you will attract more birds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators, frogs, and other wildlife.
